With the upcoming election, there are plenty of places to have divisive conversations, there are precious few to come together to overcome our differences and discover what we have in common. As Christians, God calls us to put God first and work hard to be the beloved community Jesus envisioned when he told Peter he would build his church. We need to have courage to build community in the midst of our differences. No matter what side of the aisle we sit on and who we vote for, we are God’s beloved community.
So, in this most contentious time, I am calling us to gather together for prayer and study for the 2 weeks leading up to the election and for the 2 weeks following the election to dedicate ourselves to building the Courageous Community of Christ. On Tuesdays, October 20 and 27, and November 10 and 17, we will gather from 6:00pm–7:00pm.
For those that feel comfortable, you are welcome in the Sanctuary, with all of the existing COVID protocols in place. For those that do not, we will broadcast the event LIVE on Facebook. If you haven’t already, please “like” our Facebook page and tune in to that page at the above times. Morgan will monitor the comments section, so you can be a part of the conversation.
In addition, on Election Day, I invite all of us to pray. Please thank God for all the blessings that we have received as a country. Please pray for people to be able to vote. Please pray for the future of our nation. Please pray for God to find a way to overcome the divisiveness of our current time. This is not an invitation to pray for a particular candidate or issue.
In addition to our gatherings, we will have a prayer vigil on Election Day, when at least one of our congregants will be in prayer every minute the polls are open in Ohio. Please sign up for at least 1 half-hour time slot (you can sign up for more than one) to commit to be in prayer on Tuesday, November 3.
You can sign up for your time slot by contacting the church office or by following this link: Prayer Vigil Sign Up. During your time, please pray wherever you happen to be, the church will not be open for you to come and pray due to COVID protocols. We call upon God to continue to bless our nation. As Christians, we commit ourselves to being the courageous community, whoever is in the White House or Congress or any other political office. No matter how we vote, we are welcome in the beloved community of Christ. Please join us as we work on doing this better than the world around us.
